Clear explanations.
Traceable sources.
Our public learning library connects marine insurance, underwriting and commercial shipping through independently written educational guides.
Our publishing approach
Marine Practice Hub publishes original educational guides on marine insurance, underwriting and commercial shipping. Each guide addresses a clear reader question, with technical explanations checked against primary references and sources recorded in our editorial notes.
Sources and scope
We favour original authorities: legislation and judgments, official maritime organisations, clause publishers, insurers and P&I clubs explaining their own products or practice, and qualification providers describing their own programmes. Sources are selected for the specific claim they support. An insurer's explanation of its own terms does not establish a universal market rule.
Guides identify relevant wording editions and jurisdictional assumptions when these affect the explanation. Source references and check dates are retained in our editorial records. Publication and update dates describe the guide; we change an update date when the content is substantively revised.
Examples and learning activities
Fictional scenarios and invented figures are labelled as illustrations. They help explain a relationship or decision without presenting an actual claim outcome, market quote or underwriting recommendation. We check calculations and keep the assumptions visible.
Cover illustrations establish the subject of an article. They do not define policy scope or show an agreed allocation of a claim. Instructional diagrams and worked examples carry their own explanations, including the parties, contract terms or figures assumed.
How we edit an explanation
A guide should answer its central question before asking the reader to interpret a policy. We explain technical terms when they first appear, distinguish typical practice from an identified insurer's terms, and use worked examples where a distinction is easy to miss. Headings describe the subject being taught. We revise examples that leave the reader with unanswered questions and remove repetition that adds length without understanding.
Independent and official material
The public guides are our independently authored explanations. Publisher originals and licensed study materials remain separate from the public library. References to official organisations, qualifications or clauses do not imply endorsement. See About & sources for the distinction between independent practice and official resources within the study workspace.
Corrections and updates
We revise guides when source checks identify a material change or an error is confirmed. Corrections preserve the article's stable address and update its substantive revision date. Material changes to legal or contractual explanations require a fresh check of the relevant original authority.
Using the library
These guides support understanding and further study. The policy wording, evidence and applicable law determine the analysis of a real insurance or shipping matter. Consult the relevant original wording when you need its exact terms.
